There is legislation, marketing guidelines and good business practice that details certain types of marketing that may be inappropriate for certain types of people or organisations. The problem therefore is to suppress marketing activity to these contacts if they fall within the relevant criteria.

The Impacts

The impacts vary depending on the nature of the suppression, but include the following:

  • financial impacts if telephone or fax companies/individuals who have registered with TPS or FPS;
  • cause distress if market individuals who have registered with Baby MPS or Mortascreen;
  • possibility of complaint to Information Commissioner;
  • marketing spend wasted if target people who have indicated that they don't want to receive mailings or are no longer at that address;
  • adverse affects on brand and reputation.

The Solution

We offer a comprehensive range of suppression services including:

Suppression  Description
NCOA National Change of Address. Royal Mail provides a redirection service to members of the public who wish to have mail which is addressed to them forwarded to a new address. The NCOA database is taken from this redirection database only where customers have given their consent to do so.
MPS Mailing Preference Service. A free to register service that enables consumers to register their intention not to receive unsolicited advertising material by mail. The MPS is a non profit service managed by the Governance Division of the Direct Marketing Association.
TPS Telephone Preference service. A free to register service that enables both businesses and consumers to opt-out to receive marketing communications whereby it makes it illegal for organisations to make unsolicited marketing calls.
FPS The Fax Preference Service is a central opt out register whereby businesses (and individuals if they wish) can register their choice not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing faxes. It is a legal requirement that companies do not send such faxes to numbers registered on the FPS.
E-MPS The Email Preference Service is a global service managed by the DMA in the States which allows you to register your email address so as not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing email messages.
Baby MPS Many parents to be are happy to hear from companies who can help them at this exciting time in their lives but in the sad circumstances of the death of a baby, mailings to parents about baby products from well meaning companies can cause unintended hurt.
Mortascreen In the UK, around 600,000 people die each year. The largest number of complaints received by the Data Protection Registrar are for mailings sent to the deceased. Any organisation sending out direct mail to the public should be using Mortascreen to clean cold lists or for ongoing database management for mailing purposes.
USS Universal Suppression Service. There are increasing numbers of people moving which can be irritating for the recipient and wasteful and damaging to your brand. The Universal Suppression Service can help you clean your mailing lists. It operates on the principle that the more times goneaway information has been captured, the greater the probability that it is truly goneaway.
