Targeting is one of the key factors to running a successful mailing campaign. With so many data owners offering so many different types of data it can be hard finding the right supplier to meet your specific requirements. Some list owners sell profiled data and some sell actual data which has been compiled through telephone research and/or postal surveys and questionnaires.
Unless your data is captured using software that processes the address against PAF, or that you acquire a mailing list that has been batch processed against the PAF database, then it is virtually certain that your address data will not be 100% complete, accurate or in the recommended format of Royal Mail.
There is legislation, marketing guidelines and good business practice that details certain types of marketing that may be inappropriate for certain types of people or organisations. The problem therefore is to suppress marketing activity to these contacts if they fall within the relevant criteria.
The accuracy of data decays over time, this is more relevant with B2B data than B2C data due to the dynamic nature of businesses. Employees move between companies and change function within companies on a regular basis. And although data suppression processes can help correct some of the inaccuracies, it can not fix them all.
